Trust Your Gut
Stella has been painting since she can remember.
One day, her Grandmama and Aunty set her up on the kitchen bench in a little plastic painting schmock, put en easel in font of her and away she went.
Since then Stellas artistic style has evolved and changed as she herself has grown.
“I don’t think I will ever have one set way of painting.” She says.
“As human beings we are forever changing and growing. To tie ones creative expression down, to put it in a box seems wrong. Society tries to do that to all of us anyway. Art needs to be loose and free. I practice embracing the change in myself and my artistic expression even if it feels really weird.”
Stella currently has a series of paintings featuring strong, fierce women.
“Yeah my paintings have actually started to become quite personal. The other day I realised that I have been painting the protectors of different aspects of my inner being that have felt threatened over the past few years. Painting the protectors of these vulnerable parts of myself has made me stronger and braver to say something as simple as ‘no’. ”.
Her work connects back to self and to a natural way of being. Her artworks come from an urge to express a deep feeling of disconnection from Self, Earth and Community. Her art she says is an attempt to “identify the hurt inside me and paint the healers of my pain.”
It is her hope that others will connect with that message and see these pieces as reminders to respect and protect the vulnerable parts of themselves too.
Stella grew up in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia. When she graduated from a Waldorf school, she moved out into her van with her loyal pup Wirra and has never looked back.
Her nomadic lifestyle means she can set up to paint wherever inspiration strikes (if its not raining) and is something she cannot see coming to and end anytime soon.
